Well, I was trying to think of what movie to review first for my fellow marine brethren, and I couldn’t think of a better movie to start with than The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I’ve never met a Jaguar Shark myself, but Debbie’s friend’s cousin said he met one once, but they didn’t talk much or anything. Anyways, the movie starts out a little slow, but there’s some great cameos by Portuguese Man O Wars and squids and really tasty fish. Some of the other sharks I saw the movie with thought it was really boring, but I went back the next day and watched it again alone and found some great parts to the movie. Steve Zissou is an aquatic documentarian who is concerned about his legacy, and his crew is made of a variety of entertaining characters (including the legendary bond company stooge), but the overlooked quality of the movie exists in the dynamic between Steve and Ned (Steve’s supposed son), and the relationship that they both desire but cannot find. This movie is great for the marine cameos, but really holds its own in following Steve’s transition from totally self-absorbed to appreciating the beauty of us sharks (and of his family and friends along the way).
