Growing up, I was a big Doraemon fan. In fact, I didn’t know a single kid who was not a Doraemon fan. Doraemon is probably the most famous manga in Japan. Some people think its almost the equivalent of Mickey Mouse in the U.S. Doraemon is a humorous children’s manga. It’s about a elementary school boy who is weak, lazy and not very bright. The boy’s name is Nobi Nobita, and his dedescendants from future decided to send the family robot back in time to help him out of misery. The family robot is Doraemon which is actually a robot cat. It has a magical pocket that produces many futuristic gadgets to help poor Nobi Nobita from trouble. Compare to other comics, Doraemon is a manga for children. It doesn’t involve with any superhero power, no take over the world type of plot and the hero is always a fourth-grader. Each story stands for its own mini plot and easy to follow. There is almost always a new gadget at play in each story. There is always a moral lesson in each story to teach young readers. It teaches young readers to look into issues of ethical importance, environmental issues, caring for friends and self-sacrifice for others. No wonder Doraemon has been parents’ favorites. It is fun to read and doesn’t get violent like most superhero comics.
