Priced at the lower end of Canon’s Powershot series featuring its ELPH design, the SD770IS offers the most megapixels for the money although it lacks the advanced features and higher performance seen in more expensive cameras. Unless having a 10 MP camera is important, there are other cameras in the Powershot range which may be more desirable to the casual photographer. Available in silver and black.
Customers RAVE about: Small size, easy to use, good battery life and high quality photographs.
Customers RANT about: Easy to lose, soft edges and noise when taking indoor shots, weak flash, no manual control over exposure and shutter speed, slow shutter and flash recycle times, multiple shooting modes means navigating more menus, and auto white balance could be better.
The Canon Powershot series offers an array of point and shoot cameras but the SD770IS stands out for offering 10 MP at less than $200. That being said, with these easy to use straight out of the box cameras, performance is compromised for user friendliness. The SD770IS offers professional quality photographs in a travel size camera. Those looking for advanced features should shop the higher end of the Powershot range or consider other options. Also, if yuo are not dead set on needing 10 MP, the SD1100IS (reviewed on this site) is a better buy.
Features:
As with the rest of the Powershot family of cameras, the SD770IS comes with Face Detection, Motion Detection and Optical Stabilization technology to reduce blur. The SD770IS offers Face Detection White Balance, Select and Tracking as well which adjusts for optimal skin tones and permits the user to select between multiple faces to focus on within a shot. Canon also has what it calls a DIGIC III Image Processor and iSAPS Technology which work together to provide improved focus speed, exposure and white balance. The 3x optical and 4x digital zoom is capable enough for most situations and multiple shooting modes offer a wide variety of settings rfom an easy to use menu system which is slightly more complicated from other Powershot cameras due to the availability of more setting options. The 2.5 inch LCD II screen offers Night Vision technology allowing viewing during low light conditions. The Print/Share button and Pictbridge capability allow for easy printing of photographs which can be saved onto multiple different media storage options. From my intial review of online stores, this camera DOES NOT come with a free memory card unlike other models/brands. The maximum iage resolution is 3648 x 2736 and the maximum movie resolution is 640 x 480
Slotting below the SD770IS is the SD750 which offers much of the same features as its pricier brethren but instead takes 7.4 megapixel pictures at a slightly slower speed, has a lower quality LCD screen and slightly fewer shooting modes.
Next up in the range is the SD790IS which costs more than the SD770IS but offers little extra. It has the same 10 MP performance but adds a larger LCD, 3 inches versus 2.5 and is larger/heavier.
